Yes. Just one.
It’s a 90-day devotional called Navigating the Blues. I read it on mornings I wake feeling low.
Last week, the author helped me see 1 Corinthians 13 in a new way. Known as the “Love Chapter,” it’s often used for weddings and in anniversary cards because it teaches us how to love people.
But have you ever applied it to yourself? I haven’t. It may feel a bit weird, wrong, or self-centered. But, it’s not.
Because we are people too.
Decades ago, my kids were taught J.O.Y. = Love Jesus, Others, & You. And I get it. There are times to put others ahead of ourselves, but when learning unconditional love, maybe we should flip it.
In Matthew 22:37-39, Jesus says, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
So, if we want to love others better, we have to love ourselves better.
Questions to consider:
Are you snarky and judgy with yourself? (I am.)
I Corinthians 13:4 says, “Love is patient and kind …”
Are you patient with yourself and kind to your own soul?
We can’t fully give what we don’t have. As we aim to treat others with respect, empathy, and compassion, will we give ourselves the same grace?
How will you be patient and kind with yourself today? 🤗
